The status of the intertidal soft-bottom macrofauna six months after the Gulf War oil spill

A b s t r a c t: The benthic fauna of the tidal flats north of Abu Ali (western Arabian Gulf) were analysed quantitatively for the first time to obtain baseline information about species and species assemblages, establish a methodological guideline for a recovery study, and evaluate the environmental state after the impact of the oil spilled during the Gulf War in 1991. Although the upper intertidal zone was heavily oiled in general, fauna was present in the mid-intertidal. Abundances of individuals and biomass were in the range known from other tropical shores. Epibenthic species dominated toward the supralittoral and were the first colonisers of the zones covered with oil.
