The Cetacea of the Jubail Marine Wildlife Sanctuary; Saudi Arabia

A b s t r a c t: Five species of whales, dolphins and porpoises (Cetacea) have been identified in, or close to, the Jubail Marine Wildlife Sanctuary. Three, the common dolphin Delphinus delphis, the humpback dolphin Sousa chinensis and the bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus, are common, whilst the finless porpoise Neophocaena phocoenoides and Bryde's whale Balaenoptera edeni appear to be rare. All the D. delphis belong to the "form" tropicalis and all T. truncatus to the "form" aduncus, the only "forms" of these taxa to occur in the Arabian Gulf. The observations and the material collected provide information on the spatial distribution and relative importance of the more abundant species in the study area.
