Salt-marshes and intertidal habitats of the Jubail Marine Wildlife Sanctuary: extent of oil-impacted areas and estimated losses of above-ground plant biomass following the 1991 Gulf War oil spill

A b s t r a c t: In 1992 and 1993 the intertidal salt-marsh vegetation and the extent of oil pollution resulting from the Gulf War oil spill were mapped along the shoreline of Dauhat ad-Dafi and Dauhat al-Musallamiya. From 225 km2 of intertidal habitats, an area of about 23 km2 was severely contaminated by the oil. In most cases the impact was restricted to the upper one third of the intertidal area. About 100 km of the coastline had extensive salt-marshes, of which 22 % were covered by dead, tar-sealed plants. Some 380 hectares of salt-marshes dominated by Arthrocnemum macrostachyum and Salicornia europaea were affected to such a degree that less than 1 % of the plants survived. No evidence of regeneration was found in these areas two years later. More than 1000 tonnes of above-ground plant biomass have been destroyed. Some seedlings have recolonised previously oil-contaminated habitats in the less polluted or partly cleaned areas.
